Joseph Flock, 2018 Growing Healthy Kids High School Scholarship Recipient

Joseph Flock was named The Youth Clinic Growing Healthy Kids High School Scholarship 2018 recipient. The Loveland High School senior’s primary provider, Dr. Vaughn Hanson MD, joined The Youth Clinic in 1994 after completing a four-year commitment with the U.S. Air Force at Dyess AFB in Texas.

“The Youth Clinic and Dr. Hanson have been my primary care my entire life,” said Joseph Flock, The Youth Clinic Growing Healthy Kids High School Scholarship 2018 Recipient. “They have not only physically cared for me but have emotionally challenged me to think about what kind of person I want to be. I am grateful for the financial assistance this scholarship provides.”

In high school, Flock discovered his love of encouraging and helping others through playing golf and participating in student-run organizations. Thanks to The Youth Clinic, he soon realized these passions are prominent attributes of a pediatrician. “The care and support The Youth Clinic has shown me over the years helped shape me into a person I am proud of. This fall, I will attend the University of Wyoming with hopes to become a pediatrician and give back to my community and The Youth Clinic,” said Flock.

The Youth Clinic Growing Healthy Kids High School Scholarship application requires students to turn in an essay describing a time he or she had to overcome a challenge. Essays are scored based on theme and content, organization and development, grammar, mechanics and style.

“David’s triumph over Goliath with a rock and a slingshot powerfully symbolize how we can conquer our fears. The rock represents the small steps we need to take to bring down a large problem,” Flock wrote in his essay. “The slingshot is the people in our lives that help us tackle the problems in front of us. And finally, the action of pulling the slingshot back represents David reaching out to others for confidence and help, and also offering hope to get through a tough situation. Not only in my dream career as a pediatrician, but also in my everyday life, I want to offer my hands as a sign of hope to aid others in taking down their own Goliath.”

I am proud The Youth Clinic not only helps him stay healthy and strong but also supports him in his future endeavors.”
