January Is National Hobby Month

family snowshoe winterWith the start of the new year, many people are looking to make resolutions to make 2019 a better year. Luckily, January is also National Hobby Month which means it’s the perfect time to pick a new hobby to try. Whether you are searching for an activity for yourself, your child, or your whole family, Northern Colorado offers an endless amount of indoor and outdoor activities. To help you decide what new hobby to pick up in 2019, The Youth Clinic created a short list of family-friendly activities for January.

Outdoor Adventures

If your family loves to try new things, why not get outside and embrace the winter with a fun outdoor adventure. With hundreds of hiking trails in the area, Northern Colorado is an excellent place to give snowshoeing a try. The excitement of trouncing through deep snow could become your children’s new favorite hobby. Additionally, many sporting goods retailers offer snowshoe rentals. Before you head out, be sure to plan a route, dress in layers, and bring a snack with you.

Indoor Exploring

While it can be lots of fun exploring the mountains, sometimes the cold weather is just too much. For those extra snowy days, why not stop by Fort Collins Museum of Discovery? The museum is open nearly every day of the year, and the admission fee is just $6 for children aged 3 to 12 years old. Exhibits change every few months, so there is always something new to explore. Additionally, the museum offers a number of programs ranging from music to theater to science, so there is always a chance your child will discover a new passion with every visit.

Family Fun

A third way to pick up a new hobby this January is to try different family sporting outings, such as bowling or laser tag. It can be especially fun to have the kids team up against the parents as it creates the chance for siblings to work together. Additionally, children who shy away from traditional team sports may find it rather exciting to compete amongst family. This reduces the fear of failure and gives your child a safe space to explore something new.
